Organizers say about 3,000 runners from 47 states competed in a marathon and half-marathon in South Dakota's Black Hills.
The Deadwood Mickelson Trail Marathon and half-marathon held Sunday also drew runners from Canada, Germany and Sweden.
The full 26.2-mile marathon runs from Rochford to Deadwood.
With runners missing from only Louisiana, Mississippi and Delaware, race director Emily Wheeler hopes that word-of-mouth will spark the attention of runners from all 50 states for the 2015 race.
