The South Dakota Attorney General’s Office has released the name of the suspect who was shot by a Highway Patrol Trooper Monday night in Rapid City.
William Chandler, 27, was shot by Trooper Mike Bock around 3:30 p.m. Monday afternoon after a high-speed pursuit that started in the Northern Black Hills and ended around Interstate 90 near the Caterpillar dealership in Rapid City.
Authorities say the chase ended when the car Chandler was riding in crashed in the ditch. Chandler fled from the vehicle and was later shot by Trooper Bock in the parking lot of the Caterpillar dealership. Chandler was taken to Rapid City Regional Hospital with a gunshot wound.
A second man in the vehicle, 23-year-old Joseph Paul Andrews, was also taken into custody on a probation violation.
The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting to determine if Trooper Bock was justified.
