Murder-Suicide At Sioux Falls Apartment Complex

Murder-Suicide At Sioux Falls Apartment Complex

Click here to watch this story(Windows Media) There were screams, gun shots... then silence. That's how people living in a Sioux Falls apartment complex describe what happened just feet away from them Sunday night. Shortly before nine, Sioux Falls police officers were called to the Cherry Tree Apartment Complex just off east 12th street, for what they thought was a fight. They found two people dead. Forty-two-year-old Deborah Hinrichs filed for divorce from her husband Randy Hinrichs less than two weeks ago. But Sunday night, Randy decided to end their marriage without heading to court. Instead he took his wife's life, then his own. Neighbors in this Sioux Falls Apartment Complex heard sounds Sunday night they will never forget. Nicolette Coggins says, "I heard her, I heard him. They were arguing and then I heard nothing." Police say Randy Hinrichs kicked in his wife's apartment door and forced his way inside. Coggins says she called police and within the five minutes it took for officers to respond, the fight between the husband and wife became deadly. Detective Loren McManus says, "While officers were in route to the scene they were updated that shots had been fired." Neighbors heard five to ten gun shots. Police say Randy killed his wife, then turned the gun on himself. When officers arrived, they found both bodies and a semiautomatic handgun in the apartment. McManus says, "There were multiple wounds on the victim and Mr. Hinrichs had one wound that he had died from." Police aren't sure what lead up to the murder-suicide, but they say the Hinrichs have had problems before. Including several calls to police between last August and December for fighting. Whatever the reason was for the shootings, neighbors know they feared for their lives Sunday night. Coggins says, "My life flashed before my eyes. I was terrified for my children and you know I don't wish this on anybody ever." The deadly visit was the second of the night. Police say Randy Hinrichs was at his wife's apartment at 7:30. But her attorney had told her not to let him in and to call 911. She did, but by the time police arrived, he was gone. He came back an hour and a half later with a gun. Police say the Hinrichs have one child who's now an adult.
