Munson: Janklow A 'Dynamic Force' For State

Munson: Janklow A 'Dynamic Force' For State
SIOUX FALLS, SD - Former State legislator and former Sioux Falls Mayor Dave Munson served with Bill Janklow for a number of years.

Munson calls that service an honor and hopes Janklow is remembered for what he did for South Dakota.

It was in 1978 that Munson first met Janklow.

"When I first started running for the legislature, he was running for Governor. I would go to events and he would be there," Munson said.

It was the first of many meetings to come for the two who would end up serving for several years together.

"I was really fortunate to serve with him for all his terms, eight terms, that he had in office. It was truly an honor for me to be with him," Munson said.

Munson says he remembers Janklow as person with a never before seen vision and enthusiasm for the legislative process, with a mindset determined to get things done.

"When we were in session, we knew something was going to happen because of Bill Janklow and just his dynamite spirit that he was going to make something happen in South Dakota," Munson said.

It was his determination that got the attention of many in South Dakota. Munson says his best interest was in the state. He recalls Munson being a key part in saving the railroads, wiring schools and standing up for economic development against neighboring states.

"He wasn't afraid to tackle them," Munson said.

He stood up to anyone, Munson says, and he was proud to be from South Dakota; pride that he helped pass on to others.

"I think he really lifted all of us up because of his attitude toward the state," Munson said.

Munson says like him or not, he was a man that was respected and he hopes that respect and his love for the state will be his legacy.

"My thoughts and prayers really go out to the family and people really close to the Governor and what they're going through. It really is a loss for all of us. I hope we remember him for all the good things he really did for all of us and never let that be forgotten," Munson said.

Munson calls Janklow's death a huge loss for the state because he was such a dynamic force in South Dakota.
