Muenster: McGovern Stood By His Beliefs

Muenster: McGovern Stood By His Beliefs
VERMILLION, SD -

Over the years, George McGovern made a lot of good friends, including Ted Muenster. He first met the former senator in 1962.

"I think as history goes on, he will be regarded as perhaps the most prominent political public leader ever produced in the state," Muenster said.

Fellow democrat and former Governor Chief of Staff, Muenster was a friend of George McGovern's for nearly 50 years, so news of the former Senator's death was difficult to hear.

"I think most people, including myself, were prepared for it," Muenster said. "But there was a little grimace."

The announcement brought back a flood of memories, including their time together at the 1972 Democratic Convention where the former Senator accepted his party's nomination for president.

"He was controversial at times, but he was a person that had certain core beliefs and stood by those beliefs regardless of the political whims of the moment. I think his stature in history will rise as time goes on," Muenster said.

The last time Muenster spent time with McGovern was at a Sioux Falls Pheasants game, just a couple of guys watching a ballgame. He says his long-time friend will be greatly missed.

"It is better to have known someone like that and have lost them in the end then to have never known them at all," Muenster said.
