Most Of Vivian Damaged By Hail, Wind

July 27, 2010, 9:52 PM by Shawn Neisteadt

Most Of Vivian Damaged By Hail, Wind
VIVIAN, SD - Don't expect much for celebration in Vivian if a hailstone found in the town Friday is verified as a world record. Nearly the entire community suffered some kind of damage at the hands of Mother Nature.

It'll be a long time before people in the quiet town of Vivian forget the storm that roared through late last week. Tuesday, the damage is still visible despite days of work.

"You know, they say that thing about keep away from windows in storms.  Boy, is that true because we had glass thirty feet away from windows," Derek Jones said.

Jones was in Pierre at the time the storm hit. And by the time he got home, the community was already rallying together.

"There was already a crew of neighbors. One of the nice things about small communities is that everybody waded in and tried to fix stuff already. So there was a bunch of guys boarding up the windows and patching up the roof and what have you," Jones said.

In fact, there were so many people in town helping out that Jones isn't sure where the wood that's covering his busted windows came from. But that's why he's chosen to live where he does. And this storm won't be enough to chase this family originally from England away from the northern plains.

"We just enjoy the nice community and being in a remote community. It’s got some down sides, but we really do prefer it. But a snow storm sure does sound good about now," Jones said.

And for most in the town of Vivian, they have a lot of repair work to complete before the snow flies.

The Jones family also lived through the 1994 Northridge Earthquake in California. They say even there, people banded together and helped each other, much like how the town of Vivian responded after the storm.
