Where can you get designer duds at a fraction of the cost of retail? We're not talking about an outlet mall or a website like eBay. Upscale resale shops are the latest trend sweeping the nation and there are now more to choose from in Sioux Falls.
Take one step in Relic Revivals in the Bridges at 57th, and you'd never know you were in a consignment shop--and that's the idea. Relic Revivals is an upscale, resale boutique.
"There was a J.Crew dress that caught my eye on my first day here," customer Abby Hagen said.
Hagen is an admitted clothes horse and buys and sells her clothes at Relic Revivals because she can get a deal.
"I would say that dress was probably worth roughly $280 and I bought it for $44. You can't beat it," Hagen said.
Jolene Stangeland opened the store six months ago and has already more than doubled in size. She says besides the high-quality, name-brand clothing and accessories she sells, she also sets up her consignment a little differently with customers: online.
"To see what they have in the store. How much money they've made. What day their items have sold on; they can cash out the next day. I feel like they're included in it," Stangeland said.
Resale is actually the fastest growing segment in the retail industry with an estimated growth of some seven percent a year in sales.
Another upscale resale shop is opening on South Louise Avenue. Style Encore is a new franchise from the same company that has the Plato's Closet, Once Upon A Child and Play It Again Sports brands. This is just the sixth Style Encore in the nation.
"Since we're only open to buy right now, people have come in and shopped around and it's the anticipation of being open to sell," Mikki Fitzer of Style Encore said.
Style Encore has been buying clothes to create its inventory for the last month and a half. It pays consigners up front.
"People like the convenience factor. People get paid right away, rather than putting it on eBay or waiting for it to be consigned--they like to get paid right away," Fitzer said.
Style Encore will begin selling merchandise on Thursday. Most upscale resale stores boast 50 to 70 percent off retail prices. You can also find websites like Threadflip, which lets you sell and buy secondhand designer clothes online.
