More Road Closures Starting Monday

More Road Closures Starting Monday

As summer time gets closer, more road construction will begin in Sioux Falls.

Starting on Monday, road work will start at the site of the new George McGovern Middle School. And on Wednesday, the next phase of West 41st Street construction will get underway.

Both projects have been worked out with the School District to help create fewer headaches.

Some areas of Sioux Falls are already backed up, thanks to road work. Soon it's going to get even trickier to maneuver the west side of town.

On Monday, Maple Street, outside the new George McGovern Middle School will be closed.

"We'll be in front of the school there. We'll be doing some grating. Help some site lines. And we'll also be adding a turn lane so that people can get safely in and out of the school site," said Sioux Falls City Engineer, Joshua Peterson.

The site line problems are caused by a large hill leading up to the school. The work help with the expected traffic increases from the new middle school, and a new fire station going up nearby.

While crews are in the area, they'll be working on an old bridge, too.

"We're also taking the opportunity to do an upgrade, and replace an old bridge that's passed it's useful life there on Marion Road, just north of Maple Street. So we'll be replacing that with a new box culvert," said Peterson.

Then, starting on Wednesday, work on West 41st Street will expand. The construction will shut down Sertoma Avenue north of 41st Street. This project is also working around school schedules.

"The intersection of 41st and Sertoma. We were waiting for school to get out because it is pretty heavily traveled during the school season," said Peterson.

As always, with these big projects getting underway, City engineers ask drivers to be alert.

"We encourage our drivers to leave a little bit early in the morning, if they travel those routes. To accommodate for the traffic control. Until people get used to the alternative routes," said Peterson.

Maple Street is expected to reopen by August 1. Sertoma should reopen in four weeks. And West 41st Street won't open until late November.
