More Driving Over Thanksgiving Weekend

November 18, 2012, 10:00 PM by Kellee Azar

More Driving Over Thanksgiving Weekend
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

For Sonya and Scott Wartchow, Thanksgiving will be spent at their home. This year it won't be the usual quick flight for their family from Texas and Illinois.

"My brother will usually come in with his wife and two children and his brother will come in with his three children and wife from Illinois. So since we live in Minnesota they drive in and it makes it a little cheaper then getting all of those kids on a plane," Sonya Wartchow said.

And with families getting larger, the price to get the entire family on the plane is a bit deterrent says Rae Gene Larsen from AAA South Dakota.

"The prices are more expensive and, like I said, they are limited. And with families being a little larger than what they have been years past, it is quite expensive to travel," Larsen said.

Which is a trend happening nationwide, AAA expects thousands more on the road this year compared to last year and that largely has to do with the price of plane tickets and lack of flights.

"They have depleted some of the aircrafts, so the seats that we have available are just not there," Larson said.

That means one thing for drivers this year.

"As far as road travel is concerned that is up, so there will be more people on the roads traveling," Larson said.

Even with the longer drive and ever changing prices of gas, Wartchow says it's still a better deal for her family.

"I think even with the rising and the falling of the gas prices it's still cheaper than flying, especially with all of the kids," Wartchow said.

Larson says there will be thousands more drivers on the road here in KELOLAND, which should act as a reminder for drivers to be extra alert and cautious this holiday weekend.
