SIOUX FALLS, SD -
Technology helped Sioux Falls police track down a murder suspect over the weekend.
A niece of 75-year-old Maybelle Schein found her body Saturday afternoon in Schein's southwest Sioux Falls town home. As police investigated the crime, they learned Schein's vehicle was missing. It was equipped with OnStar so police contacted the company and the vehicle was located in Madison, Wisconsin.
Wisconsin authorities tracked down the vehicle, but the driver took off and led them on a pursuit on Interstate 90. Eventually, the officers stopped the vehicle and arrested 41-year-old James Vernon McVay. He's being held on several charges including grand theft, eluding, and DWI. Sioux Falls police say they expect to file a first-degree homicide charge against McVay as early as Tuesday.
Police believe McVay got into Schein's town home through a garage door she had left open for her pets to use. At this point, Sioux Falls police are still working to develop a timeline for the crimes and determine if the victim and suspect knew each other.
McVay is a former inmate in the South Dakota State Penitentiary.
