Monday Evening Business Brief

September 10, 2012, 5:31 PM

Monday Evening Business Brief
  • Stocks lost ground to begin the week on Wall Street. The Dow dropped 52 points to 13,254. The S&P was down 9 points to 1,429, while the Nasdaq declined 32 points to 3,104.
  • The Federal Reserve says consumer borrowing dipped $3.3 billion in July from June to a seasonally adjusted $2.7 trillion. A drop in credit card debt offset an increase in auto and student loans.
  • Thousands and possibly millions of web sites hosted by GoDaddy.com are down. The "Anonymous" hacker group claims responsibility, but the real reason for the outage is unclear.
  • The price of oil finished slightly higher. Benchmark crude rose 12 cents to settle at $96.54 in New York.
  • Royal Dutch Shell halted drilling in the Chukchi Sea today, just a day after it began. That's because of sea ice moving toward the company's drill ship off Alaska.
