If all goes as planned, shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday, Donald Moeller will be the 18th inmate executed in South Dakota.
Moeller is being executed for the rape and murder of nine-year-old Becky O'Connell in 1990 in Sioux Falls. For many years, Moeller has appealed his death sentence. It was earlier in October when Moeller first admitted to killing the young girl, saying the death penalty is a just sentence for the crime he committed.
Before he is moved to the death chamber, Moeller will wait in a holding cell. Based on other executions, Moeller will likely be moved out of that cell around 9:30 p.m.
Once in the death chamber, he will be secured to the table and IVs will be started.
Around 10 o'clock, Moeller will be asked to make a final statement to the witnesses and the injections are started shortly after that.
If could take as long as 20 minutes before the injections are completed and Moeller is pronounced dead.
After that, a news conference will be held so that witnesses can share what they saw.
