Mobridge Bank Robbery Suspect Sentenced
June 22, 2010, 9:29 AM
ABERDEEN, SD -
A Mobridge woman who robbed a bank so she would be taken to jail has been sentenced to 1 1/2 years in federal prison.
Fifty-one-year-old Sonja Brown earlier pleaded guilty to taking $6,299 from Dacotah Bank in Mobridge last Nov. 10 and could have faced up to 20 years in prison.
Authorities say Brown wanted to go to jail to be near a suspect in a different criminal case, so she could retaliate against that inmate at the request of a relative of the victim in the other case. She was drunk at the time.
Judge Charles Kornmann said during sentencing that the public doesn't need to be protected from Brown, but she needs to be protected from herself.
Brown said she is ashamed and embarrassed by what she did and apologized in court.
