Mitchell's City Hall Likely To Get Historic Title

December 14, 2012, 7:15 AM

Mitchell's city hall building appears destined for inclusion on the National Register for Historic Places despite the objections of city leaders.

The South Dakota State Historical Society State Review Board voted last week to make the building eligible.

State historic preservation specialist Liz Almlie will prepare and file a report to the National Park Service office responsible for the National Register of Historic Places.

The Mitchell City Council opposes the designation and voted 6-1 on Nov. 19 to ask the society not include the building. Members are concerned that the designation may limit the city's ability to remodel, or possibly demolish, the building.

State Historical Society director Jay Vogt says the national office almost always follows the recommendations of state offices.
