Miranda Tran Charged With Murder

Miranda Tran Charged With Murder
A Sioux Falls mother arrested for seriously injuring her baby is now charged with his murder. Twenty-four-year-old Miranda Tran's baby, Aiden, died early Friday morning at a Sioux Falls hospital.

She was arrested Thursday afternoon when emergency crews arrived to find the four-month old wasn't breathing.
Officials determined he had head injuries from blows, shaking or hitting an object or surface.

Miranda Tran sobbed quietly in court Friday morning. Arrested Thursday for aggravated assault, the charge changed to 2nd degree murder when her son died.

Her family sat behind her and offered support as the judge told her if found guilty, she could spend the rest of her life in prison.

The details of what happed to Aiden Tran Thursday morning at his home are still not being released. But the seriousness of the crime led Lincoln County state's attorney Tom Wollman to request a 750,000 dollar cash only bond.

Wollman says, “We believed it was an appropriate bond amount to ensure her appearances at all future court dates and as well the other consideration we look at is whether or not she's a danger to the community.”

If found guilty of second degree murder, Tran will be sentenced to life in prison. The thought of her daughter spending the rest of her life behind bars brought Tran's mother to tears.

“I can't envision a darker day for Aiden's family and extended family. Obviously our hearts go out to them collectively and they’re in our thoughts and prayers…and as well I'm sure that it is not a very pleasant day for the defendant either,” Wollman says.

Wollman says in these types of cases, he becomes the voice of the victim. He says from this day forward he will be Aiden's voice and will seek justice on his behalf.

Wollman says, “Anytime you're dealing with a youngster that can't adequately describe what took place or in this case is in effect silenced....does make the case much more difficult to deal with.”

An autopsy was scheduled for Friday afternoon. The case will now go to a grand jury and Tran will return to court December 4.
