Minnesota School Closed Due To Flu

January 11, 2013, 6:10 PM by Stephanie Gregory

Minnesota School Closed Due To Flu
WORTHINGTON, MN -

Normally, 57 students walk the halls at Worthington Christian, but not on Friday.

Lori Eekhoff, the principal of Worthington Christian School, says it had to shut the doors after 18 students and one teacher came down with flu-like symptoms.

Of those out sick, Eekhoff says four were confirmed influenza.

Meanwhile, at the city's public schools, superintendent John Landgaard is seeing students sniffling, sneezing and coughing. Luckily, not many.

"You could understand why they are closing the doors, trying to clean the bugs away and trying to break the cycle," Landgaard said.

Landgaard says his schools recently saw an illness outbreak among teachers.  He says the district uses many precautions to make sure the germs don't spread.

"Having hand sanitizers available of all the buildings.  They are at the front doors, going into the library or by computer rooms where there is high maintenance," Landgaard said.

If there was an outbreak at the public schools and students were missing class, the Minnesota State Health Department would be called in.

"They recommend closing at times if you have huge number of kids related to flu-like symptoms," Landgaard said.

Eekhoff hopes to open the school's doors on Monday.  She plans to talk with parents this weekend, making sure the students are feeling better before heading back to class.
