Minnesota Family Cleans Up From Tornado

June 18, 2010, 5:55 PM by Perry Groten

Minnesota Family Cleans Up From Tornado
ALDEN, MN - A KELOLAND man joined in the cleanup efforts after a tornado damaged several  farms near Alden, Minnesota.

David Zeller has family ties to the area devastated by the tornado. He grew up in a home near Alden that was damaged in the storm. So this is, by no means, a happy homecoming for him.

Picking up the debris tossed about by a powerful tornado is an overwhelming task when the damage is this widespread.

"You don't really know where to start to even pick stuff up to be honest, because everything that's here is out there, or over there, just busted up," Zeller said.

Before he was behind the wheel of a tractor, Zeller was driving his pickup the three hours from Willmar to Alden after learning his brother's farm was damaged.

"It was tough, I had to keep my mind busy to not think about what I was going to see when I got here," Zeller said.

And Zeller's worst fears were confirmed when he saw the damage first-hand. Farm buildings, a home, and so many memories lost amid the rubble.

"There's a lot of hard work that's gone into making the farm what it is today. It just doesn't take very long to wipe that all away," Zeller said

Even though Zeller lives far from here, not even a tornado can sever his close ties to this now-devastated landscape.

Zeller works for a feed manufacturing company in Willmar and will take time-off for however long it takes to clean up his brother's farm.
