The techies are coining it the mini launch of the iPad mini.
Mini Mania was seen around the globe when sales started on the new Apple iPad mini. Japan consumers showed a lot of enthusiasm for the latest high-tech gadget, while hundreds lined up in more subdued lines in Chicago.
But only a handful of people waited for the Sioux Falls Best Buy to open up early at 8 a.m. to be the first to get their hands on this slim device priced at $329.
"I'm a little embarrassed to say I was the first one in line, but yes I was," Kevin Griffith said.
Some were there to get the perfect gift for a loved one.
"I've been scoping out whether to go with the regular iPad or the mini and I actually looked at dimensions and I think it's kind of nice for her throwing it in her purse or carrying it around; pretty mobile," Adam Halford said.
Also out Friday is the latest full size iPad. It got an update after just six months with a faster processing chip and a new camera among other things
"I'm excited this has the new retina display and HD video so I think it's going to be pretty awesome," Griffith said.
But sales of both devices aren't expected to be overwhelming. Between 1 million to 1.5 million iPad minis are expected to be sold this weekend. That compares with opening sales of 3 million for the new iPads back in March and 5 million iPhone 5s sold on opening weekend in September. Consumers may be getting a little launch weary, with new devices coming out all the time.
"Electronics go faster than we can think. They probably already have a new one on the docket right now," Griffith said.
The iPad mini launched Friday includes only Wi-Fi. The cellular wireless version won't be for sale for several weeks.
