'Mighty Monday': 3rd Busiest Shopping Day?

'Mighty Monday': 3rd Busiest Shopping Day?
SIOUX FALLS, SD - The day after Christmas is dubbed 'Mighty Monday' and retail research firm ShopperTrek says it could be the third busiest shopping day of this year.

Shoppers who didn't find exactly what they wanted under the Christmas tree are hoping for better luck at the Empire Mall.

"It's kind of crazy out here," shopper Jodi Keller said. "I wasn't expecting it; I had a hard time finding a parking spot."

After weeks of shopping for others, Keller is buying for herself on Mighty Monday and taking advantage of deep discounts.

"It is my time today," Keller said. "Everybody has gone home. I can be by myself and just relax with the people at the mall."

And Keller isn't alone. Thousands of shoppers are flooding mall stores the day after Christmas.

"I had a few things that I wasn't sure that I liked for Christmas and so I wanted to exchange them," shopper Tia North said.

"I actually came to spend some of my gift cards," shopper Breanne Manthey said. "I got a $100 gift card and a $50 VISA gift card to use at the mall. And so that's what I'm going to come and look for the deals."

ShopperTrak says there could be 60 percent more shoppers than this time last year, because the day after Christmas is on a Monday instead of a Sunday.

"The biggest thing to remember is today is a day customers are spending their gift cards they received for Christmas," Empire Mall Director of Marketing Jennifer Morrison said.

So whether they're cashing in on gift cards or exchanging for something better, the holiday shopping season is continuing to burn bright.
