James McVay, July 2011
SIOUX FALLS, SD -
The man who murdered a Sioux Falls woman as part of a plot to assassinate the president has admitted to the crime.
41-year-old James McVay pleaded guilty but mentally ill to first-degree murder Wednesday afternoon. Before the judge agrees to accept the plea, McVay must undergo a psychiatric hearing.
McVay walked away from a transitional program at the South Dakota State Penitentiary, killed 75-year-old Maybelle Schein in her home, and stole her car this summer. When Sioux Falls police realized Schein's car was missing, they contacted OnStar to help them locate it in Wisconsin.
KELOLAND's Ben Dunsmoor was in the courtroom for the plea. He'll have an update on the case on KELOLAND News at 5 and 6.
