McVay Only In SD Solitary Confinement A Month

SIOUX FALLS, SD -
KELOLAND News is learning more details about James McVay's past, his time in the South Dakota state penitentiary and his plan to assassinate the President.
Thursday night we learned McVay will remain in a Wisconsin jail for at least another month while he gets a mental examination and awaits and August 11th hearing. The test will determine if the 41-year old is competent to waive his extradition, so he can return to South Dakota and be charged with the death of 75-year old Maybelle Schein.
KELOLAND News found out Thursday that McVay has actually only been in the South Dakota Penitentiary for the last month. He was transferred there from Nebraska on May 11, 2011.
McVay had committed a crime in Nebraska in 2009 when he escaped from prison in South Dakota. So, when he was done serving his time there he came back here, where he was put in solitary confinement to finish his sentence for his escape. He stayed in solitary confinement up until the day he was released last Thursday, and in that month he says he made plans to kill the President.
McVay isn't shying away from the crime he committed on Saturday in Sioux Falls. He says 75-year-old Maybelle Schein was blocking him from carrying out his mission of killing the President.
"Collateral damage, there was no malice or anything. It wasn't personal. She was in my way and I removed her," McVay said in a jailhouse interview with a Madison, WI TV station Wednesday.
McVay said in his jailhouse interview he would do it again if that's what he had to do to assassinate the President. McVay says his hatred for Barack Obama and Joe Biden began in the last month when he was in solitary confinement at the South Dakota State Penitentiary.
"They placed me in solitary confinement and while I was there, I sat with nothing but a radio and my own hallucinations," McVay said.
Officials with the South Dakota Department of Corrections told KELOLAND News Thursday that prison inmates are allowed to have radios and headphones in what's called 'disciplinary segregation.'
They are also allowed to have soft-cover religious books, legal documents and letters, but they can't have TV's, they can't have any photos of family or friends, and they are only allowed out of their cell for 45 minutes a day for recreation.
The rest of the time McVay said he listened to a lot of talk radio and formulated his plot.
"And, I started listening to talk radio. I listened to the Sean Hannitys and the Rush Limbaughs."
And the hatred that started to brew in the state penitentiary boiled over when McVay was released last week and started to carry out his plan that McVay says was going to end when Obama was on the golf course.
"I was going to get him on the golf range."
When McVay was arrested in Nebraska back in 2009 he had made statements that he wanted to kill Vice President Joe Biden, that's when the Secret Service talked with McVay and McVay's brother in Minnesota.
Tony Galli of WKOW talked with McVay from the Dane county jail Thursday afternoon. To hear the interview click on the video player.
