McGovern Unsuccessful In PUC Race

November 7, 2012, 6:39 AM

McGovern Unsuccessful In PUC Race
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Things didn't work out the way PUC candidate Matt McGovern would have liked on Election Day.

The Democrat lost his campaign against Commissioner Kristie Fiegen, who Governor Dennis Daugaard appointed last year to fill a vacant seat.  Fiegen received 53.9 percent of the vote while McGovern received 40.4 percent and Libertarian candidate Russell Clarke received 5.7 percent.

"And I called Commissioner Fiegen recently to congratulate her on winning her election and she was very gracious," McGovern said.  "The people spoke and so we're going to just keep working though for consumers and farmers.  When I started campaigning, we started this marathon in March and I said I was going to work for consumers and farmers not the utilities the PUC regulates if I was elected.  And I said I was going to go out and meet as many voters as I could."

McGovern says while he may not have won the race, the campaign was a success in raising awareness about the issues.

"We elevated the profile of that issue and even got to the point where Excel itself, a $12 billion company, had to respond to our grassroots campaign and try to defend themselves," McGovern said.

McGovern thanked all his supporters and volunteers who helped spread their message.
