SIOUX FALLS, SD -
Had he decided to run, John Thune would have been the third South Dakotan to ever seek the nation's highest office.
Republican Senator Larry Pressler ran for president in 1980. Democratic Senator George McGovern ran in 1972. McGovern was by far the most promising South Dakota candidate the state had ever seen, winning the Democratic nomination for president.
After hearing about Thune's decision, McGovern says he thinks it's the right one. McGovern says the country is plagued by national and international problems right now and he feels Thune could use more experience before being thrown into that.
We'll have more with McGovern later in the day on KELOLAND News.
