In recognition for his efforts throughout his life in feeding the hungry, Co-Op Natural Foods is posthumously awarding former South Dakota Senator George McGovern with the Civic Achievement Award.
To go along with the 40th anniversary of the Co-Op and the numerous activities they are putting on throughout the month of August, the business is choosing to recognize McGovern for a career-long dedication to making sure people had the food they need.
Long-time friend and staff member Judy Harrington accepted the award on his behalf, and says that the work McGovern did throughout his life was truly his calling.
"To me, for George, the Food for Peace was not the name of an office or just a slogan, it was really his philosophy of life,” former Staffer Judy Harrington said.
Before his passing, McGovern formed a close relationship with the group Feeding South Dakota, having any memorial offered in his name go to the organization to help families get a needed meal.
