The final touches are being put in place at George McGovern Middle School. Construction at the northwest Sioux Falls school is running smoothly and ahead of schedule.
Workers are busy all over George McGovern Middle School as the finishing touches go into the new state-of-the-art facility.
"Most of the finishes are in. As far as the classroom area, we have done final inspections there. So the contractor is doing punch list items on that. So that part, basically the west half of the building is completed," construction supervisor for the Sioux Falls School District Darrel Jones said.
Everything from the gymnasium to the auditorium and even the sun-filled library are just waiting for a few final items before they're ready for students next fall.
"The contract date was I believe July of this coming summer. We will probably be taking over the building in March. So it's going to give our people a lot of time to come in and do the finishing touches, as far as some final carpet cleaning, waxing and then start moving in different furnishings," Jones said.
While the weather isn't favorable, even the outside of the school is ready for students.
"Football field is planted. All of the parking lots are done. Fieldhouse is in place. So pretty much once the snow, if and when it melts, we'll start having some grass pop up this spring. So we're pretty much ready to go for the exterior also," Jones said.
But lucky for these men, all of the work left to do now is on the inside.
"We had some real good weather last fall, so the contractor was able to get just about everything enclosed. So when the cold weather hit, other than the general has some pretty high heat bills, it hasn't affected the schedule of work any," Jones said.
The school is expected to hold about 700 students when it opens in the fall of 2014.
