McGovern Estate Sale This Weekend

January 24, 2013, 5:55 PM by Perry Groten

McGovern Estate Sale This Weekend
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

South Dakota political history goes on sale to the public this weekend.  You can soon own a piece of George McGovern's legacy.

The former U.S. senator and presidential candidate passed away last October at the age of 90.  McGovern's family is selling his possessions during an estate sale at his Sioux Falls home Saturday and Sunday.

A houseful of George McGovern memories from a lifetime in politics, stacked, shelved and priced to move.  Everything must go.

"We really feel the estate sale is a way to honor their belongings," Deb Sorensen of Finders Keepers said.

The items up for sale include posters, pictures and paintings.

"We've got things starting at a dollar up to thousands of dollars, so everybody's price range is here," Sorensen said.

The bulk of McGovern's belongs are books: lots of books.

"And we've got books that he wrote.  We've got books that were given as gifts from the author signed by the author.  We've got books he made notes in which he was reading," Sorensen said.

One of the more unusual items up for sale is this spear given to McGovern on his final trip to Africa.  A pointed reminder of the lives he touched all across the globe.

"I always knew he was a great guy, but really get to know how important people were to him," Sorensen said.

A man of the people whose belongings will go to the public he served.

"And that's what I think he would want.  He would definitely want to share it back, definitely," Sorensen said.

McGovern's daughter, Ann, says it will be difficult for the family to part with so many of her father's belongings.  But she takes comfort knowing that they'll be purchased by people who will take good care of the items.
