MBK: Vikings Roll Past Crookston

Augustana had a steady night offensively with three players reaching double-figures in a 79-61 win over Minnesota Crookston on Saturday night in Sioux Falls. Daniel Jansen led the Vikings (10-6, 7-3 NSIC) with 19 points and Casey Schilling added 18 points, eight rebounds four assists and three steals.

Freshman forward Devin Gilligan added a season-high 12 points on 6 of 10 shooting. Adam Beyer matched his season-high with six assists to go along with nine points and four rebounds.

The Vikings shot 46 percent (27 of 59) from the field and hit 7 of 22 (32 percent) from 3-point range. Minnesota Crookston was lights out from 3-point range, hitting 53 percent (9 of 17) after knocking down 6 of 8 from behind the arc in the first half alone.

Tyler West led UMC with 13 points and six rebounds while Tim Lubke added 12 points on 4 of 5 shooting, all from 3-point range.

Augustana and Minnesota Crookston traded points through the first seven minutes of the game as both teams started off the night 5 of 10 from the field but Augustana held a 14-11 lead after back-to-back baskets by Devin Gilligan.

Following the game's first media timeout, Minnesota Crookston hit 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to take a 19-16 lead with 11:21 to play in the first half.

After Gilligan's eighth point of the half, Schilling drilled a 3-pointer that sparked a 12-0 run over the next three minutes helping the Vikings regain the lead at 28-19. Augustana started off the half 1 of 6 from 3-point range over the first nine minutes of the half but Schilling and Jansen each hit one from behind the arc to spark the run.

UMC's Lubke stopped the run with his second 3-pointer of the game but Augustana scored seven straight points to extend its lead to 35-22 at the final media timeout of the first half with 4:27 left. Minnesota Crookston did not back down as they were able to get within five at 37-32 going on a 10-2 run over the next two and a half minutes.

The Vikings scored with 44 seconds remaining in the half and were able to score once more as UMC missed a shot with 12 seconds left to go into the locker room with a 41-31 lead at the half.

The Vikings finished the half shooting 50 percent (15 of 30) from the field, including 4 of 13 from 3-point range. Augustana was just 1 for 6 to start the game from 3-point range but hit their next three attempts and finished the half 4 of 13.

Schilling led Augustana with 13 points, four rebounds and four assists in the half while Jansen added 10 points and Gilligan eight off the bench.

UMC shot 46 percent (11 of 24) from the field but were lights out from 3-point range hitting 6 of 8 (75 percent) to keep themselves within reach.

Augustana picked up where it left off in the first half, hitting 4 of its first 9 shots going on a 10-3 run over the first six minutes extending its lead to 16 at 51-35. UMC's Lubke drilled his third 3-pointer of the night to cut the lead to 13 but the Vikings scored 14 of the game's next 18 points to take its largest lead of the night at 65-42.

The Golden Eagles fought back and would not let the Vikings pull away with the game as they went on a 14-4 run over the next four minutes to get within 13 at 69-56 with 4:32 to play in the game.

That is as close as it would get as the Vikings would close-out the victory, 79-61, for its seventh straight home win over Minnesota Crookston. Augustana is now 12-1 all-time against the Golden Eagles.

Game notes
Augustana turned the ball over five times, just one shy of tying its season-low of four.

Augustana dished out 16 assists as a team, marking its second highest assist total of the season.

Beyer matched his career-high with six assists.

Jamall Taylor dished out a career-high five assists.

Gilligan finished with a career-high 12 points.

Whats next
Augustana returns to action Jan. 17-18 taking on Minnesota State and Concordia-St. Paul. The Vikings will take on Minnesota State at 8 p.m. on Friday night in Mankato, Minn. before squaring-off with the Golden Bears at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
