Ethan Guske scored nine straight points with five minutes in the second half to spark Augustana to a 92-88 win over Minnesota State University Moorhead (16-7, 12-7 NSIC) on Friday night at the Elmen Center. Guske finished with a career-high 22 points, knocking down five 3-pointers, to help the Vikings improve to 15-11, 10-9 NSIC.
Guske hit a 3-pointer with 5:11 to play and then scored on a fastbreak on the next possession and was fouled and hit his free throw to give Augustana a 77-74 lead. The Vikings were able to build their lead up to seven in the final four minutes but the Dragons would not go away quietly as they kept within three points for much of the remainder of the game.
Malik Wood pulled the Dragons within one with a 3-pointer with 1:24 to play but Adam Beyer responded with one of his own to push the Vikings’ lead back to four. After Beyer hit a free throw to give Augustana a five-point lead, MSUM’s Tyler Vaughan drilled a 3-pointer pulling the Dragons within two once again. Augustana hit four straight free throws in the final 14 seconds of the game in between a long jumper by Vaughan that brought MSUM back within two once against with seven seconds left.
Guske hit two free throws with four seconds left and MSU Moorhead was only left with a heave to end the game.
Daniel Jansen recorded his fourth double-double of the season in the win leading Augustana with 26 points and 10 rebounds on 8 of 16 shooting. Casey Schilling added 13 points and seven rebounds while Isaac Jorgensen finished with a career-high seven points and seven rebounds.
Vaughan led the Dragons on the night with 21 points on 8 of 13 shooting, knocking down five 3-pointers. Urbane Bingham finished with 12 points for MSUM and was another of four players in double-figures.
Augustana’s magic number was three through the first three minutes of the game as the Vikings hit two 3-pointers and converted a 3-point-play to build a 9-4 lead early. The Dragons tied the game with five straight points but Jansen gave the Vikings an 11-9 lead after grabbing two straight offensive boards laying out for the rebounds.
MSU Moorhead went on a 10-2 run over the next three minutes to take a 19-13 lead after Tarell Clark converted a 3-point-play getting a layup and the foul. Augustana answered by scoring 17 of the game’s next 22 points on a 17-5 run to take a six point lead at 30-24.
The Vikings went ahead by six after Schilling scored four quick points coming up with a big steal at half court and going the distance to get the basket and the foul. Urbane Bingham scored five straight points for the Dragons to cut Augustana’s lead to one but the Vikings went on an 11-2 run quickly over the next two minutes to build its largest lead of the night at 10, 41-31.
MSU Moorhead closed-out the final 1:57 of the first half on a 9-2 run, scoring two straight baskets near the buzzer. The Dragons held for the last shot and scored on a jumper by Matt Nelson to cut it to a four-point game at 43-39. The Vikings threw the in-bound pass away and Yuriy Malashenko was called for a foul on the play allowing Ngijol Songolo to hit one of two shooting 1-and-1 with no time left on the clock.
Augustana held on to a 43-40 lead at the half after shooting 48 percent (15 of 31) from the field, knocking down four 3-pointers. The Dragons finished the half shooting 50 percent (14 of 28) from the field while hitting 5 of 11 from 3-point range.
Augustana out-rebounded MSU Moorhead 21-13 in the first half as Isaac Jorgensen led the Vikings with seven rebounds in just 20 minutes. Jansen led all players in scoring in the first half with 13 points on 4 of 7 shooting. Guske and Schilling each added eight points for MSU Moorhead in the first half.
MSU Moorhead quickly tied the game in the second half on a Tyler Vaughan 3-pointer but the Vikings were able to build a six-point lead after Jansen scored eight points in a four-minute stretch taking a 57-51 lead after Jansen converted a 3-point-play.
Augustana was able to build its lead up to 10 but the Dragons would not go away holding Augustana two points on an 11-2 run to cut the Vikings’ lead to one at 63-62 with 9:31 to play. The Dragons used the momentum as Prescott Willams forced an Augustana turnover and went on the fastbreak for the bucket to give his team a 64-63 lead. The lead marked MSUM’s first since the midway point of the second half.
The game would be tied three more times in the final eight minutes when the Vikings went ahead for good with 4:44 to play after Guske took the ball the length of the court to get the basket in the middle of his nine-point tear in a one-minute span.
Guske finished with a career-high 22 points.
Guske is the fourth active player from Augustana to score 20-plus points in a game.
Guske is the first 20-point scorer other than Jansen or Schilling since Matthew Brazendale scored 20 on Dec. 7.
Jansen recorded his fourth double-double of the season (seventh career).
Jansen (26) and Guske (22) are the third different duo to score 20-plus points in the same game this season.
Jorgensen recorded career-highs in points (7) and rebounds (7).
Augustana snapped a two-game losing streak to MSU Moorhead.
Augustana scored 40 points in the paint against the Dragons, marking the fifth time this season with 40-plus points in the paint in a game.
Augustana will play its final regular season home game tomorrow night hosting Northern State at 6 p.m. at the Elmen Center.
