MBK: USD Rolls Past Peru St.

MBK: USD Rolls Past Peru St.
VERMILLION, SD -

South Dakota stepped outside of Summit League play for the final time this season to hand Peru State an 80-40 drubbing at the DakotaDome Tuesday. All 11 Coyotes factored into the scoring, led by sophomore Tyler Flack’s 13 points on 6 of 6 shooting.

Peru State, an NAIA Division I team from Peru, Neb., was outmatched and up against a USD team shaking off a four-game skid. The Coyotes held the Bobcats to 15 points in the first half and 27 percent shooting for the game. Peru State was 0 of 13 from beyond the arc and had three assists against 17 turnovers.

The Coyotes, meanwhile, tossed alley oops and worked fast breaks that pleased the home crowd. Half of Flacks’ six field goals were dunks, though teammate Tavian Pomlee may have won the dunk off with a one-hand slam off a fast-break pass from Casey Kasperbauer midway through the second half.

South Dakota’s bench outscored Peru State by itself 48-40. Pomlee had nine points. Kasperbauer made four three’s for 12 points, Adam Thoseby had 11 and Tyler Larson had 10 points, six rebounds and six assists.

USD’s starting five played 10 minutes of the first half and the first five minutes of the second. Flack’s 13-point, six-rebound night came in 17 minutes of work. Brandon Bos scored nine points in 14 minutes.

Peru State’s moral victories were that it featured the game’s top scorer, Jesse Jones with 18, and it won the first three minutes of the contest 6-3. South Dakota scored 18 of the game’s next 20 points. Bobcat senior guard Nate Bohy, who averages 20 points this season, was held scoreless on five shot attempts.

USD junior guard Jack Foley entered the scorebook by making two free throws with four minutes to go. They were the first two free-throw attempts of his collegiate career and he swished them both. Foley logged a career-high 17 minutes, including seven in the first half.

The Coyotes (9-13, 3-4) begin the second half of Summit League play Saturday at Denver. Five of South Dakota’s remaining seven regular season games will be played on the road.
