MBK: USD Falls To Cowboys In OT

Larry Nance Jr. converted a three-point play with 2.6 seconds left in overtime to lift Wyoming to a 67-66 win against South Dakota in front of more than 3,300 fans inside the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Saturday. Nance Jr. scored a game-high 25 points for the Cowboys (7-2), who have won six of their last seven.

It was the second meeting between the two programs in the last two weeks, but this one was a better show than the 70-53 Wyoming win in Laramie. This one featured 13 ties and 13 lead changes. The largest lead was 44-37 South Dakota with 12 minutes left in regulation.

South Dakota got a team-high 22 points from guard Brandon Bos, who pulled off the improbable to send the game into overtime. Up 60-57 with six seconds left, Wyoming chose to foul Bos with three seconds left. Bos made the first free throw, missed the second, got his own rebound and was shoved to the floor with one second remaining. Bos rattled in both free throws to force overtime.

USD forward Tyler Flack earned his first collegiate double-double with 11 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. He hit a 3-pointer with 1:43 to go in overtime that gave the Coyotes a 66-62 lead.

Nance Jr. dunked home a Josh Adams miss on the ensuing possession to cut the lead to 66-64 with 1:12 left. It was one of several impressive moves by Nance Jr., who was 9 of 14 from the field and 7 of 11 from the free-throw line.

South Dakota got three shots off on its next possession, but couldn’t convert. Wyoming worked the ball to the left side of the hoop to Nance Jr., who hit a short jumper and was fouled with 2.6 seconds left.

Both teams called timeout before the final play. Casey Kasperbauer fired a long pass to Flack, who caught the ball near the three-point arc, spun and took two dribbles to get towards the side of the hoop and just missed what would have been a game-winning shot.

The loss was the Coyotes’ second in three nights. The game was the second of a USD women’s and men’s doubleheader. The Coyote women defeated South Dakota Mines 81-49 in the appetizer.

In addition to Flack and Bos, senior center Trevor Gruis reached double-digits with 10 points. No other Coyote scored more than five. South Dakota shot 35 percent from the field (22 of 62) and made 17 of 22 free throws.

Adams scored seven of his 12 points from the free-throw line for the Cowboys. Derek Cooke Jr. didn’t miss a shot, scored eight points and had 14 rebounds. Riley Grabau hit a three-pointer with 19 seconds left in regulation that gave Wyoming a 59-57 lead. Grabau had three three’s for nine points.

South Dakota (3-5) returns to the court Tuesday against Kansas State in Manhattan, Kan. The Coyotes will play their third home game of the season next Saturday (Dec. 14) against Green Bay.
