MBK: The Coyotes Entered The Jungle & Came Out With A Win

South Dakota senior center Trevor Gruis notched his 1,300th-career point and continued his dominance of IUPUI in a 71-67 win Saturday at the Jungle. The Coyotes (10-15, 4-6 Summit) got a much-needed road win ahead of next week’s final two regular season home games.

Gruis has now scored 111 points in six career games against the Jaguars. He had a game-high 18 points on eight buckets and two free throws Saturday. He scored 10 points during the first eight minutes of the second half when the Coyotes made their move. The teams were locked at 32 at the break.

Junior guard Tyler Larson earned his second start of the season and scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half. Larson’s second 3 of the stanza gave USD a 62-52 lead with six minutes to go. He made two free throws with eight seconds left that gave USD a 70-67 lead and added another free throw that sealed the win with three seconds remaining.

IUPUI (6-22, 1-10) trailed 64-56 with 2:05 on the clock, but got within a point on an Elijah Ray triple with 10 seconds to go. After Larson made two free throws, the Coyotes opted to foul Marcellus Barksdale to prevent a tying 3-point attempt. Barksdale missed the first, intentionally missed the second and Larson snagged the defensive board.

Ray had 12 points to go with six rebounds. Mitch Patton led the Jaguars in scoring with 16 points. Barksdale had 10 points and six assists.

USD point guard Trey Norris contributed 10 points, six assists and two steals. Tyler Flack added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Coyotes.

Gruis (1,313 points) is the 19th player in program history to score 1,300 points. He is the leading scorer and rebounder for the team this season. Gruis and senior teammate Karim Rowson will play their final collegiate home games next week against Omaha (Thursday) and Western Illinois (Saturday).
