MBK: Rabbits Run Past UND

MBK: Rabbits Run Past UND
GRAND FORKS, ND -

South Dakota State shot a season-high 53.3 percent from beyond the 3-point arc and got more than 20 points from both Brayden Carlson and Cody Larson in a 77-70 win over North Dakota on Saturday at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.

The Jackrabbits, who even their record at 7-7, exchanged runs with North Dakota (3-7) all night for its first road win of the season.

“I think for them, having a couple of big kids out certainly didn’t help them, and we took advantage of it,” head coach Scott Nagy said. “It’s unusual for us to only shoot 15 threes, but we shot a good percentage and we threw the ball inside a lot, to a lot of people, and we’ve changed from a perimeter orientated team to a post orientated team, and our kids are really starting to buy into it and believe in it.”

The Jackrabbits went 8 for 15 from long range and 25 for 51 in the game, 49 percent, including a 13 for 19 mark in the second half, 68.4 percent. UND, on the other hand, went 25 for 53 in the game overall, 47 percent, and 8 of 19 from long range, 42 percent.

North Dakota scored the first basket of the game, but the Jacks responded with a 7-0 run to take the lead, a lead that would reach as many as 12 points at 27-15 with 7 minutes, 20 seconds left in the first half after back-to-back 3-pointers from Chad White and Carlson, but UND came firing back, using a 12-1 run later in the half to tie the game at 32-all at halftime.

North Dakota scored the first three points of the second half to push the run to 15-1, but baskets from Jake Bittle and Larson gave the Jacks the lead back at 36-35, the first of three lead changes and one tie over the next four and a half minutes.

Jordan Dykstra broke the lone tie, at 40-all, with his only 3-pointer of the game that put the Jacks up for good, part of a 12-1 run, that Larson capped with an old fashioned 3-point play with 13:03 left in the game.

UND didn’t go away though, and responded with a 7-0 run that cut the Jackrabbit lead to one at 59-58, only to see the Jacks answer with an 11-0 run to match their largest lead of the game at 12 points, 70-58, with 3:09 left to play.

North Dakota cut the lead to as few as four points with 14 seconds left, but the Jacks sealed the win from the free throw line.

Carlson led the way for the Jacks with a season-high 22 points, adding five rebounds and a game-high four assists. Larson finished with 21 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Dykstra finished with nine points and five rebounds.

Troy Huff led all players with 30 points, with both Jaron Nash and Jamal Webb adding 12 points in the loss.

NOTES: North Dakota leads the all-time series with South Dakota State 104-81 … the teams played in front of a crowd of 2,261 … SDSU went into halftime tied for the first time this season … SDSU’s first road win of the season also marked UND’s first home loss of the season … Carlson scored at least 20 points for the second time this season and for the fourth time in his career … Larson scored at least 20 points for the second time this season and the second time in his career … two Jackrabbits scored at least 20 points in the same game for the first time since Nate Wolters (36) and Chad White (21) did it at Oakland on Feb. 9, 2013, and for the first time in a win since Tony Fiegen (24) and Jordan Dykstra (22) did it at home against Oakland on Jan. 10, 2013 … White’s nine points moved him from 33rd on the all-time scoring list to 30th with1,087 career points … Dykstra’s lone 3-pointer gives him 165 for his career, tying him with former teammate Griffan Callahan for fifth all-time at SDSU
