MBK: Mavs Eliminate The Vikings

No. 15 Minnesota State shot 54 percent from the field and built a 15-point halftime lead earning a 78-63 over Augustana men's basketball in the quarterfinals of the NSIC/Sanford Health Men's Basketball Tournament at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls. MSU (27-4), the No. 1 seed in the South Division, got a career-high 30 points from Gage Wooten, including 19 in the first half.

Augustana, the No. 5 seed in the South Division, ends its season at 16-14. The Vikings were led by Daniel Jansen's 22 points and freshman guard Adam Beyer's 10 points, seven assists and four rebounds.

Minnesota State was lights out from the start of the game as it shot over 50 percent from the field, hitting 5 of 10 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes. MSU finished the game 6 of 16 from behind the arc after hitting 5 of 10 in the first half.

Augustana finished the game shooting 38 percent from the field, hitting 6 of 29 (20 percent) from 3-point range. Devin Gilligan added 11 points for Augustana on 5 of 10 shooting.

Minnesota State jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the first two and a half minutes of the game. Beyer scored the Vikings' first two baskets of the night to cut MSU's lead in half at 8-4 but the Mavericks got a 3-pointer from Gage Wooten that pushed their lead up to seven at 11-4.

The Vikings started to see some more shots fall in the next three minutes of play and cut into what was a 10-point Minnesota State lead when Austin Saugstad nailed a 3-pointer from the right corner to make it a 20-13 game with 10:17 to play in the half.

Minnesota State took the ball into the lane over the next five minutes, scoring eight points during a 13-6 run in the paint to build a 14-point 33-19 lead with just over four minutes to play in the half. Jansen and Brazendale hit 3-pointers on Augustana's next two possessions to cut the lead to 33-25 but Wooten caught fire over the next three minutes for the Mavericks.

Wooten scored 10 straight points over the next minute and a half, hitting two 3-pointers, giving his team a 43-25 lead. Devin Gilligan hit a 3-pointer with a minute left in the half and neither team would score the rest of the way as the Mavericks would take a 43-28 lead at the half.

Minnesota State was lights-out in the first half shooting 54 percent (18 of 33) from the field while hitting 5 of 10 from 3-point range. Wooten led the Mavericks with 19 points in the half going 8 of 10 from the field, including 3 of 3 from 3-point range.

Jansen led Augustana's scorers in the first half with nine points on 4 of 9 shooting. Beyer finished with six points and four rebounds for the Vikings who shot 34 percent from the field hitting just 4 of 16 from 3-point range.

The Vikings attacked the rim early in the second half going on an 8-1 run over the first 1:30 of the second half to cut MSU's lead to single digits at 45-36. Augustana continued its strong play in the second half extending its run to 13-4 through the first five minutes to get within six at 47-41 with 14:48 left in the game.

Alex Hanks hit his first basket of the night, a 3-pointer, that pushed MSU's lead back up to night and started a short 7-0 run for his team putting them up 54-41.

Augustana got within seven twice over the next three minutes but the Mavericks were able to build a 19-point lead and use the momentum of the big first half for the win.

Viking seniors Yuriy Malashenko, Evan Pierce and Ben Shellim played the final games of their career at Augustana.

Game notes
Beyer dished out seven assists on the night, marking the fourth straight game with four or more.
Beyer finishes the season with 104 assists.
Jansen recorded his ninth 20-point game of the season (11th career).
