A man who walked away from custody in South Dakota is back in an Iowa jail.
Storm Lake, Iowa, officials said authorities found 54-year-old David Lee hiding under a mattress Friday afternoon. Police caught up with Lee when they noticed a 2014 Subaru with Minnesota plates at an apartment complex on Highway Street. That vehicle was wanted in connection with an ongoing investigating by the Cherokee Police Department. When police went inside the complex, Lee ran off. After a short pursuit, police caught up with him hiding under the mattress in someone else's garage.
Authorities say Lee walked away from the Yankton, South Dakota, correctional facility in February 2013. Warrants had been issued for his arrest for a parole violation and forgery.
After investigating, police found the Subaru was also stolen.
Lee is now being charged with possession of stolen property, interference with official acts and public intoxication. He is being held in the Buena Vista County Jail and waiting extradition back to South Dakota.
