Man Run Over In Snow Storm
SIOUX FALLS, SD - Sioux Falls police officers have responded to more than 100 crashes since this snow started falling, but possibly the worst crash in the area happened early Monday afternoon.

A man trying to pull a car out of a ditch is in the hospital after being hit by another car. It happened Monday afternoon on Interstate 29 near the Madison Street exit.

Authorities say the man was on a roadside service call, trying to pull a stuck vehicle out of the median, when something went terribly wrong. 

"A car came over the bridge.  There were some other cars in the ditch, but for some reason, the vehicle lost control and it did hit the pedestrian," Captain Kevin Joffer of the South Dakota Highway Patrol said.

The highway patrol says the man's injuries appear to be serious, but officers are still gathering information because they've been busy answering other accident calls.

They don't believe speed was a factor, just slick road conditions. 

"It is dangerous to be out there providing a service, whether it's a wrecker or someone with a small business who is pulling someone out or even if you want to be the Good Samaritan and try to pull somebody out.  Doesn't seem like a big deal, but there's a lot of traffic on the roads," Joffer said.

The crash slowed traffic on Interstate 29 down to one lane, backing up vehicles for several blocks.

This is one of several accidents in the area; authorities say it's a reminder to not overdrive the conditions. 

"We keep reiterating it, but please slow down and don't create another emergency because conditions change from location to location.  They may appear good at the time, but they may be slick," Joffer said.

The man's name has not been released yet. The South Dakota highway patrol has responded to six injury accidents and 50 calls since 6:00 a.m.
