A truck driver is in the hospital following a crash at Interstate 29 and South Dakota Highway 50 Monday afternoon.
The semi was going about 68 miles per hour when authorities say the driver had a coughing attack. The semi left the road and went into a ditch near the Vermillion exit. It then went up the embankment, hit the bridge guardrail and vaulted over the highway before coming to rest in the ditch on Interstate 29.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol says the driver was wearing his seat belt and was taken to a Sioux City hospital with life-threatening injuries.
