A 21-year-old Sioux Falls man is heading to prison after he pistol-whipped a store clerk during an armed robbery last spring.
Martine Moreno was sentenced to 13 years in prison on Tuesday. The crime happened last April when Moreno tried to rob the IU General Store on Cliff Avenue. He pointed a loaded revolver at the clerk, demanded money and hit the clerk in the face with the gun.
The crime sparked a standoff with the SWAT Team.
"I think it sends a clear message that if you're going to commit these senseless acts of violence in this community, it will not be tolerated and you will sit a significant penitentiary sentence," Minnehaha County State's Attorney Aaron McGowan said.
Moreno's blood alcohol level after he was arrested was 0.30, nearly four times the legal limit.
Moreno apologized in court for the crime and said he will accept his penalty 'like a man.'
