A Sioux Falls man accused of raping his girlfriend's six-year-old daughter could face up to life in prison. Police arrested 23-year-old Emmanuel Pio at about 4 a.m. on Sunday at an apartment on East 42nd Street. According to police, the man lives in an apartment with his girlfriend and her daughter.
Shortly before 4 a.m., authorities said the mother woke up and discovered Pio was not in bed. She went to her daughter's room and found Pio in his underwear. According to courts papers, the daughter had been sexually assaulted.
At this point, authorities said there is no indication of sexual abuse prior to this event, but that such crimes typically involve someone who knows the child. That is why police recommend keeping a close eye on anyone who is interacting with your child.
"They should really pay attention to the kids. If there's some type of sexual abuse taking place, there's usually going to be a change with the way they're acting. There may be some things they're doing that aren't normal or something they haven't done in the past. So parents need to be aware of what their kids are doing and where they're going and just talk to the kids to see what's going on," Sioux Falls Police Public Information Officer Sam Clemens said.
Pio is charged with first degree rape, a class C felony. Bond is set at $250,000.
