Madrigal Pleads Guilty For Deadly New Year's Crash

July 22, 2014, 10:22 AM by Ben Dunsmoor

Madrigal Pleads Guilty For Deadly New Year's Crash
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

The 21-year-old drunk driver who hit and killed a 38-year-old wife and mother with his SUV on New Year’s Day pleaded guilty Tuesday.

Oscar Madrigal pleaded guilty to manslaughter and his second DUI Tuesday morning. He admits he caused the crash at 10th Street and Sycamore Avenue on January 1 that killed Tanya Sanchez.

Madrigal was driving home around 1:30 a.m. that morning after drinking at a party when he blew through a flashing red stop light at the eastside intersection and hit the van Sanchez was riding in. Blood tests showed that Madrigal’s blood alcohol level at the time of the crash was 0.204 – more than two times the legal limit. A test conducted an hour later showed a 0.187 BAC.

In court Tuesday Madrigal’s attorney John Wilka said his client is pleading guilty because he wants to spare the family from a lengthy trial. The plea agreement caps Madrigal’s prison time at 20 years.

Madrigal will be sentenced on October 20.
