Lynette Johnson Reacts To Supreme Court Ruling

Lynette Johnson Reacts To Supreme Court Ruling
Ron 'RJ' Johnson

SIOUX FALLS, SD -

The wife of Ron 'RJ' Johnson says she's devastated by Thursday's Supreme Court ruling overturning Rodney Berget's death sentence.  Lynette Johnson spoke about one of her husband's killer's reprieve from death row.

Lynette Johnson attended Berget's sentencing last year and heard him say he deserved to die for killing her husband, Correctional Officer Ron Johnson.  Lynette is still holding out hope that Berget will eventually be executed.

A wife's anguish over what she considers justice delayed.

"Will there ever be justice for us?  I don't understand that word justice, really," Lynette said.

Lynette was hoping to see Berget die for the crime of killing her husband.  Instead, Berget's death sentence has been overturned by a technicality.

"All the other aggravating factors were there.  They're there!  He had Ron's blood on him.  The DNA's on the pipe; he admitted it.  And he's not here," Lynette said.

Lynette thinks the state Supreme Court ruling striking down Berget's death sentence will drag-out the case for months, if not years to come.

"Most definitely.  You take one step forward and go back six.  I know it takes years and they have to do things right, but it's hard," Lynette aid.

Hard because Lynette says the emotional pain only gets worse the longer Berget's case goes through the courts.

"It will never, ever be over, ever!  And no justice!  What do you get?  No, never, never be over," Lynette said.

Lynette says Berget needs to be put to death because of the threat he poses to other correctional officers at the South Dakota penitentiary.
