Luverne Still Uneasy With Flag Compromise

May 25, 2014, 6:33 PM by Kathleen Serie

Luverne Still Uneasy With Flag Compromise
LUVERNE, MN -

Although American flags will still be flying in Luverne, Minnesota for Memorial Day, some residents aren't pleased with a compromise that started last year.

Following an initiative to rebrand the city, new banners were hung up on each lamp post on Main Street. Each sign signifies what makes this southwest Minnesota town unique, under the slogan of Luverne, Love the Life. Because of these banners, the city is unable to continue the tradition of displaying American Flags up and down Main Street on each lamp post.

"There's  a lot of people here that really support the troops and I don't know who changed it up, but it would be nice even if half of these were flags." veteran Elliot Ricehill said.

American flags will be displayed for 12 hours tomorrow at four Main St. intersections, the bridge over Rock River, two local cemeteries, and the site of a future flag park. Luverne Mayor Pat BoStion stresses that displaying patriotism is each citizen's responsibility, and encourages residents of the city to fly flags at their own homes.
