Luverne Farmers Trying To Recover From Heavy Rain

Luverne Farmers Trying To Recover From Heavy Rain
LUVERNE, MN -

The City of Luverne is still picking up damage after Rock River overflowed in city limits two weeks ago. The severe weather is also affecting crops for area farmers.

Farmers around Luverne this spring were asking for more rain, now just weeks later, they are begging for it to stop.

Hail and flooding destroyed both corn and soybean fields. Some farmers are currently replanting their fields to try and salvage the harvest. Gary Overgaard had some of his product north of his home destroyed, but looking at other fields, he knows it could have been much worse.

“You feel lucky because you didn't get it but you feel sorry for the guys because that's the way nature is. One farm might hit it and another farm won't get a stone on it so it's hard. It's just how nature works,” Overgaard said.

Overgaard says a lot of farmers in the area will have to rely on crop insurance this summer.

We will take a look at how the price of corn and soybeans will be affected by the damaged crops coming up tonight on KELOLAND Weekend News at 10.
