Louise Avenue Construction To Provide Safety

June 22, 2012, 6:31 PM by Lindsey Branwall

Louise Avenue Construction To Provide Safety
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Construction along Louise Avenue began last week.  Both the growing development and safety concerns are the driving cause behind the project.

A road out of Sioux Falls, somehow found a dead end.

"Any two-lane road like this with no turn lanes, no shoulder; it's at its capacity," City of Sioux Falls Engineer Chad Huwe said.

With so much traffic along Louise Avenue, two lanes just wasn't enough.

That's why residents living along the stretch are now welcomed to their development by a gravel road.  They'll deal with an alternate route through the summer months.

If you look behind the construction, you'll see the support of the people.

"Projects always go much better for us [the city] if we're out here meeting with all of the property owners," Huwe said.

"Well, it'll be all on the other side of those trees," resident Herb Tammen said.

Tammen's backyard extends to Louise Avenue, and he is referring to where a new turning lane will be.

He sold a portion of his lot to the city temporarily.  He is happy to have a turning lane and glad the city's been easy to work with.

"We know it's gotta be done, and it can't be done quietly," Tammen said.

It was the sounds of caution and construction that brought Ian Brueggeman and his dad to check out the progress.

Brueggeman is excited with what the finished product will bring.

"A sidewalk," Brueggeman said.

Sidewalks will provide a safe way for him and the family to bike to B&G Milky Way.

"Then we don't have to bike along the road or that development," Brueggeman said.

Whether it's for milkshakes or safety, piles of dirt and neon shirts are bringing welcome progress.

Crews on Louise Avenue are planning ahead.  There will be hook-ups installed underground for a traffic light; it will make for easier installation if the new intersection ever needs one.
