30-year-old Brad Johnson and 28 year-old Cody Kollars were on their way back from a Special Olympics Basketball Event in Yankton on Highway 46 when the crash took place.
According to authorities, the Dodge Pickup that Johnson was driving struck a bridge guard rail, then crossed the road to the left and struck another guardrail before vaulted and rolling into a ditch. Both were pronounced dead at the scene, and both were wearing seatbelts. Barb Sandoval was also in Yankton, and has known Johnson and Kollars for over 20 years. She says that both men were respected and loved by the Special Olympics' community across the state.
“The loss is definitely a loss for the Sioux Falls group but the state. There's so many people that know the athletes across the state so that will be felt,” Coach Barb Sandoval said.
The Highway Patrol is currently investigating the crash.
