Looking Back At Tornado Tuesday

June 24, 2014, 5:34 PM by Grant Smith

Looking Back At Tornado Tuesday

It is the 11th anniversary of Tornado Tuesday.

South Dakota has seen some of its most severe storms this time of year.  Last week, tornadoes and floods caused widespread destruction.

Eleven years ago, on June 24, 67 tornadoes touched down.  The town of Manchester was destroyed.

On the day known as Tornado Tuesday, an extremely strong low pressure tracked through KELOLAND. It was this low that allowed an F-4 tornado measuring a half-mile wide to go through Manchester, leaving very little behind but everyone survived.  The Manchester tornado also set a new record. A weather sensor that took a direct hit from the tornado measured a 100 millibar drop in pressure in five seconds, the deepest and fastest pressure drop measured directly by a weather instrument in any weather event.

The town of Manchester is now considered abandoned, but it hasn't necessarily been wiped off the map.  You can still find it on updated government maps and in the most recent census in 2010.
