Rodney Berget, who is serving two life sentences for attempted murder out of Lawrence County and for kidnapping in Meade County, first broke out of the state Penitentiary a few months after being placed there in 1984. He was caught after a few days and then found guilty of escape.
He got out again in 1987. Berget and five fellow inmates broke out of prison by cutting through bars in an auto shop that led into a recreation building. They took off on Memorial Day, and it wasn't until mid-July that officials in Kansas caught Berget.
He tried again in 2001 while officials were moving him but was immediately caught.
Berget was charged with multiple felonies in three counties following a crime spree that ended in a standoff in 2003. He was sentenced to a pair of life sentences without parole.
The other inmate, 48-year-old Eric Robert, is serving an 80-year sentence out of Meade County for kidnapping. In 2005, he plead guilty to kidnapping after impersonating a police officer and locking a woman in the trunk of her car.
