Livestock Disaster Aid Signup Begins Tuesday

Livestock Disaster Aid Signup Begins Tuesday

Ranchers in the Dakotas who lost cattle and other livestock during an early October blizzard can start signing up for federal disaster aid this week.

Signup begins Tuesday for the Livestock Indemnity Program, which could cover as much as two-thirds of a rancher's loss.

The snow storm that hit Oct. 4-5 killed more than 43,000 cattle and other livestock in South Dakota and more than 1,000 farm animals in southwestern North Dakota.

Industry-led relief funds have raised more than $5 million for South Dakota ranchers and $163,000 for producers in North Dakota. But officials say government help also is needed.
