Lincoln County Could See State And Federal Flooding Aid

Lincoln County Could See State And Federal Flooding Aid

Record-setting rains for Lincoln County could now lead to help from the State. After roads and bridges were washed away in last week's storms, major repairs are now needed for the County's infrastructure.

In total, 18 roads, bridges and culverts in Lincoln County, from just south of Sioux Falls all the way to Beresford, need fixing. Many of those roads are now impossible to drive on, including a bridge just north of Canton, which was washed away into the water below.

The closures are forcing drivers to find alternate ways to get in and out of towns. Those detours will be there until the proper repairs can be made.

The Lincoln County Commissioners will begin the repair process at their meeting on Tuesday. They hope to receive emergency money through the State to complete the repair projects affecting the county's highway systems.

While the commissioners in Lincoln County are hoping that the state funds will be made available to them quickly that may not be the only source of funding to help with repairs.

Governor Dennis Daugaard has asked FEMA to authorize funding for three South Dakota counties. Lincoln and Union counties could receive Federal help after flooding, and Jerauld County may receive help after a tornado ripped through many towns including Wessington Springs.

FEMA surveys could begin in those counties as soon as Thursday. The Lincoln County Commissioners meeting begins Tuesday morning in Canton at 8:30.

Meanwhile, Lincoln County residents who need help with flood cleanup is asked to call 211.
