Lewis And Clark Lake Study To Wrap Up This Summer

March 27, 2014, 7:51 AM

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers expects to know within months whether dredging Lewis and Clark Lake on the Missouri River in southeastern South Dakota would be worth the cost.

Hydraulic engineer Paul Boyd is project manager for the Lewis and Clark Sediment Management Study. He says the study should wrap up this summer, and will include dredging cost estimates.

Buildup of sediment in the lake has been a problem for decades and has worsened in recent years. Missouri Sedimentation Action Coalition Executive Director Sandy Stockholm says the lake is nearly 30 percent full of silt and is expected to become half full by 2045 unless it's addressed.

Boyd says the corps wants a long-term management solution rather than a quick fix.
