DEADWOOD, SD -
The Lawrence County Commission has started discussing the possibility of building a new jail.
Commissioner Bob Ewing says the current jail in the northern Black Hills city of Deadwood is deteriorating. He has urged other commissioners to start considering building a new jail or renovating an existing building into a jail.
There is no formal planning effort under way, but Deputy State's Attorney Bruce Outka says the county should start considering the issue because it takes a long time to plan a jail.
The current jail was built in 1974 and has 52 beds for inmates. Officials say the jail population ranges from 35 up to the 52-inmate maximum.
